This single rock face has hundreds of images. Some of them are believed to be as much as 1500 years old, while others are definitely newer. It was pretty interesting to see so many in one place.

Newspaper Rock State Park is located just outside the entrance to Canyonlands National Park, about 40 miles south of Moab and 60 miles north of Monticello. The drive off the main road is about 20 miles. Aside from the mileage, it was really easy to get to, even in our large Learning Vehicle.

Harrison and Amanda take a moment to draw some picures of Newspaper Rock, and jot down some facts.

How many different animals can you find here?

People did not have horses on the American Continent until the Spanish brought them. That tells us that the image of a man on a horse here was carved sometime after 1500ce.

SHOW ME! Harrison drew some of the images from Newspaper Rock. Can you identiry any of them?

Notice the tracks in this close-up. What sort of creature do you think they represent?
